To enhance our study of the Civil War, we are reading the novel Who Comes With Cannons? by Patricia Beatty. This is a wonderfully written story about Truth Hopkins, a young Quaker girl from Indiana who is sent to live with her relatives in the North Carolina when her father becomes ill. Although she is very upset about moving to the South and being emerged into a culture that supports slavery, Truth quickly discovers a family secret that changes her life and her views about her relatives. A string of events sets her on a heroic mission filled with danger, secrecy, and suspense.
